Back at it Again

As some of you may remember, I also write straight contemporary romance under my real name. I may have mentioned that I finaled in a prestigious writing contest in March. Since that time I’ve pretty much been “over there” doing frantic rewrites and revisions to my manuscript, which has been read now by a couple of big name literary agents.  The point is to market my very best product while my name is “hot”. So far I’ve had favorable comments but no takers.

Here’s what I’ve noticed: when writing becomes all about trying to please others, trying to fit into the guidelines, trying to “work the formula”, all the joy goes out of it for me. After a few weeks of that I was questioning whether I had any writing ability at all, when I couldn’t make that book be something other than what it was.  So after a lot of soul searching and thrashing and angst-filled emails to my crit partners, I finally decided to let it be. Just let it be.  For the last few days I’ve been back “over here” writing fun, erotic, shorter stuff that comes from my gut and doesn’t have the heavy onus of having to impress anyone but me. It’s the best thing ever. I feel like a writer again. The words are flowing. Joy is flowing.

Yes – this is what I want to do with my life.

At some point, I will go back and fix that manuscript on my own timetable, when I’m moved to do so and the creative juice is freely flowing once again. For now, I’m happy, happy writing as Pepper.
