A Declaration

Hello Readers! Welcome to your New Year. Welcome to a fresh beginning, where just about anything is possible. What a great, exciting feeling!

I had planned to sleep in this morning, to stay warm in the cozy cocoon of my blankets and maybe dream about fame and fortune in 2013. But my older son and his buddy were up early to go fishing and they inadvertently woke me. Once awake, I started thinking of all I wanted to accomplish this day and this year, and the next thing I knew I was putting on my clothes and pouring a cup of hot decaf.

Because staying in a dream doesn’t get us any closer to our goals, does it?

I used to get up every morning at 4:00 to write. That was back when my kids were small and those early morning hours were my only free time. That was also in the days when I smoked a pack or more a day; I realize now that it was my nicotine habit that woke me so early and kept me awake while I chain-smoked those first few cigarettes of the day. I thought for years it was my awesome dedication to being a writer.

A declaration: This is my year. This is the year I push past all the excuses and circumstances and distractions and find a way to write every single day. This is the year I will tell a story or two that will make a difference in the lives of the people who read it. Beware, readers, I plan to suck you into my make-believe world for awhile.  I plan to entertain you, to maybe invite you to think a new thought or two. Or feel something you forgot you could feel.

I took this photo from my dining room window yesterday morning. It’s hard to see in the picture, but the western sky — which should have been dark — was crimson. It looked like a sunset! It hit me later how appropriate it was that the last day of the year would dawn that way, appearing to be the end of the day. This morning it is icy and cold on my deck. Invigorating!

Welcome to 2013!
